Why Small Fires?

Small fires are open-hearted, open-minded conversations about important educational ideas.

While attending the Adaptive Schools Foundation Seminar in Lake Tahoe, on the first day, participants were asked to engage in a “small fires” conversation, as an inclusion process, to build connection with each other. They arranged their chairs in small circles of four, and participated in a structured dialogue around imaginary camp fires. They were moved by shared experience, diving into personal stories of their educational commitments, quickly creating trust.

A belief Lucinda holds is that small fire conversations are necessary in our complex world, to bring more shared understanding and thoughtfulness to our collective decision-making to whatever arena we find ourselves in. This is essential for the process of change and wholehearted engagement.

As we know, small fires can erupt into large ones.
