When the educational doctorate opportunity arose, Lucinda knew she was keen to engage, since she often returned to the research literature to inform her leadership practice as an elementary school administrator. At the outset, Lucinda was intent on investing her energy on exploring the role of the principal. She has a sincere desire to not only be more informed about how she can improve, but also how she might foster and support the development of other school leaders.
Early on in the doctoral coursework Lucinda read, “The Future of the Principalship in Canada: A National Research Study” (2014), and was struck by the discussion on the complexity of the current role in Canada, which resonated with her own experience. The growing diversity of students, managing technology, and the changing family were some themes that were identified that are contributing to current reality in schools. Key recommendations were outlined, including the need for principals to further develop specific leadership skills to foster leadership capacity within their teachers.
Lucinda has utilized the mindsets, strategies and models, on leadership and collaboration through Adaptive Schools. She has observed that utilizing this approach has significantly influenced the school culture and contributed to a shift in organizational patterns, such as reducing teacher isolation. She is curious about the stories of other principals who use the Adaptive Schools approach and how it may have impacted their leadership efficacy and sense of agency.
Further details about her research can be found below.
